Narrative Entropy (Sn)

Developed by Levent Bulut within the Bulut Doctrine, it reconstructs narratology in the context of information theory and thermodynamics: narratives are treated as physical systems whose disorder can be scored, compared, and engineered. The construct has a canonical definition with version history and a formal comparison against Shannon entropy (H).
Sn versus Shannon Entropy (H)
Shannon entropy measures uncertainty in an information source; Narrative Entropy measures structural disorder in a narrative system. The formal comparison (DOI 10.5281/zenodo.19421808) establishes where the two constructs converge and where narrative physics departs from classical information theory. Extreme values of Sn correspond to two failure states of a narrative system: Narrative Cold Death, where structure collapses into predictable order, and Narrative Heat Death, where disorder rises until coherence is lost.
The Sn Measurement Protocol v1.0
Sn is operationalized through a scored protocol (DOI 10.5281/zenodo.19410663) with operational definitions, numerical scoring standards, and inter-rater reliability procedures. The protocol scores two dimensions:
- Information FrictionThe resistance information encounters within the narrative system — how hard the reader must work to extract signal. Documented on its own framework page.
- Causal BranchingThe multiplication of causal pathways within the narrative — how many futures the system holds open at each state.
A registered two-scene pilot report and pre-validation protocol (DOI 10.5281/zenodo.20362901) documents the first empirical operationalization of the metric.
Case Studies
The reconstruction of narratology through Sn is demonstrated on Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, analyzed both as an information-theoretic system (DOI 10.5281/zenodo.18940587) and as a thermodynamic system in which chaos is engineered and controlled (DOI 10.5281/zenodo.18648817 series companion: 10.5281/zenodo.18648498). Catharsis itself is redefined within this program as entropy reversal and thermal discharge at narrative climax (DOI 10.5281/zenodo.18940868).
